Week 8 Discussion

One of the key points of this course is the project charter. The project charter is a contract between the project sponsor and the project manager, provides a broad view of expectations, and allows the project manager to mobilize resources to achieve the right results. The main features of a good project charter are transparency and sufficient information so that after reading it, everyone has a clear idea of the project. Components of the team charter include an introduction, project reasons, project purpose, project benefits, success metrics, project costs, internal and external issues. The range is potential risks.

Project scope can be defined as part of project planning, which includes discovering and documenting a list of deliverables or features involved in project implementation. In other words, the scope of the project is the definition of the project goals and what should be achieved.

Change management includes processes, tools, and techniques that are used to manage the individual aspect of change and achieve the desired results. The process of transforming a quality management program into actionable quality activities that integrate the organization’s quality policies into the project. The main advantage of this process is that it increases the probability of achieving quality goals as well as identifying ineffective or low-quality processes.

The tips we learned from this course were very helpful. In general, project management is the process of guiding the work of a team to achieve goals and achieve success metrics at a specific time. The main challenge of project management is to achieve all project goals within the set limits. This information is usually described in the project documentation created at the beginning of the development process. The main constraints are scope, time, quality, and budget. The purpose of project management is to produce a complete project that is in line with the customer’s goals. In many cases, the purpose and application of project management are to shape or modify the project to achieve the customer’s goals.

I enrolled in the PM691 time and cost management class for the next semester. In this course, I will get acquainted with the time and cost of the project. This course can provide extensive information on project management and risk and planning and quality.

Unit 8 Discussion: Key Takeaways

What did you learn?

I have learned a whole lot in this eight-week course in respect to project management. I now know that project management is the planning, directing, and controlling of resources such as people, equipment, and material to meet the technical, cost, and time constraints of a project. Prior to this course, I had no knowledge and appreciation of just how much planning, directing, and controlling of resources it takes to meet the technical, cost, and time constraints of a project. In addition, the documents (deliverables) involved in the management of projects and much less how top management is who decides which of three organizational structures (pure project, functional project, or a matrix project) will be used to tie the project to the parent firm. And lastly, how important it is that when planning the project that flexibility is built into it, because no one project ever goes the way it was planned. Therefore, as a project manager, one must expect change to happen throughout the duration of the project and must enforce tools such as a change request process where core leadership or a committee decide whether a change request should be approved or not. Moreover, to keep stakeholders informed of the projects progress through a communication plan.

What are the key takeaways from this course?

Therefore, the four key takeaways in my opinion for this course are:

Understand and utilize the principles of project management

Understand and utilize the project and team charters

Understand and utilize the projects’ scope of work

Understand and utilize risk management

What will you expand on in the next class?

As I continue to learn more about project management in the remaining three project management courses, I will continue to expand on case two the “City of Wilmington Mobile Breast Cancer Lab” project. In working and implementing the principles in which I have come to learn and appreciate in PM690-Project Management (PM) the first of four PM courses.

Which project management class are you planning on taking next and when?  Have you already started coordinating efforts with your team for your next project management class?

Upon successful completion of PM690-Project Management, the next course in PM will be PM692-Communication, Risk, and Stakeholder Management come in this years’ summer session. However, since I will not be taking this course right after the completion of PM690-Project Management, I am not able to coordinate efforts with my current team for PM692-Communication, Risk, and Stakeholder Management. This is because our team consisted of only 3 members, and one of them, will have completed their degree plan with the successful completion of their final course come spring II semester. As for the other member, she will continue to PM692 for the 2022 Spring II Semester. So, given the circumstances, I hope to continue to work on case two the “City of Wilmington Mobile Breast Cancer Lab” project with new team members come this summer.
