Your book indicates that the United States spends 14.6 of its gross domestic product (GDP) on health care expenditures and this figure continues to increase. In the 1970’s, it was the cultural belief in America that we did not have enough facilities and services, which led to the Hill-Burton program. A second assumption during that time frame was that individuals who were disadvantaged had limited access to the health care system; therefore, the Medicare and Medicaid systems increased to allow increased access for the elderly and needy. Finally, Americans started to believe that competition and regulation did not work for health care, so Congress created the Professional Standards Review Organizations (PSROs) through the Social Security Act of 1972. What transpired after the creation of the legislation? Were the changes a positive or negative evolution for this country? Why or why not?
