TASK 1 CASE STUDY – DESIGNER PROFILE The purpose of this task is to investigate and analyse the work of a contemporary fashion designer who is noted for their use of historical events and details in their design practice. In keeping with the theme of ancient and modern you are to select a contemporary designer you admire (I chose John Galliano (his work at Christian Dior)) and analyse and explain their use of historical references, events and details in their collections. (This is very important, the details the designer used in the garments). You may choose to do this in TWO of ways: Focus on a particular season or collection that is significant or Focus on the practice (working methods) of your chosen designer in detail. Areas to address in your case study: What is significant about the period in history that influences your chosen designer? E.g, political, social, cultural and aesthetic factors. How does your chosen designer adapt aspects from that period to their practice. E.g, consider their design development process, patternmaking, use of technology. What is the reaction to your chosen designers historical adaptation, eg, did it spark controversy? Format: Written essay format, 1500 words include at least five pictures that support your essay. Include citations throughout, identify and reference images used and provide a reference list using Harvard referencing format, at least 8 references).
