Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation’s largest non-profit working to protect families from drunk driving, drugged driving, and underage drinking. Briefly summarize why MADD was established and their mission. Also, visit madd.org and identify a component of MADD that you would like to include in your social media campaign.

In the last ten years or so, a number of modifications and additional amendments have been added under Presidents Clinton and G.W. Bush, including the expansion of the Act in 2008.

1. How has the recession that began approximately in 2008 affected the lives of people with disabilities, i.e., have there been cuts in programs? Research the issue, and summarize your findings. (This need not be an exhaustive search, but give at least one example.) (50 points)

2. A related employment issue for persons with disabilities is the controversial existence of “sheltered workshops”. Research the issue and outline a) the positive aspects b) the negative position, and c) your own position. Justify your point of view. (50 points)

Question 3:

This week’s discussion centers on an exploration of educational opportunities for children with disabilities, the controversial concept of “inclusion” in the classroom and in the sports arena.

The inclusion of children with special needs in classrooms with children with disabilities is a complex and much debated question. We were made aware of the inclusion of a runner with artificial legs who competed in the last Olympic Games. Recently, the question of inclusion has also been debated with respect to sports as well as in education.

A. Research the issue of inclusion of children with disabilities in classrooms with children without disabilities. What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages? Also research the issue of inclusion of persons with disabilities in sports and, based on your research, discuss your position. Paraphrase, summarize, and cite your sources.

B. Ask the discussion question for this week. What would you like to see discussed in this conference? Post the question and respond to your classmates’ questions, making sure that each student who has posted his/her question has at least one response. Your question, must of course, be related to disability issues and may be an extension of one of your assignments, for example, or another topic about disability that we have not covered in the past weeks
