Overview and Purpose: QALMRI is an acronym, matching up to six questions, that serve as a guide to focus your reading of empirical research articles. The six QALMRI questions ask you to extract key information about empirical research, which will help you practice comprehending empirical research.

Grading and Logistics: You will complete three QALMRIs this semester. For each, you will read one empirical research article (assigned by the Professor), and then write short answers to the six QALMRI questions using clear and concise language. You should think of this as an efficient way to summarize the article. Each QALMRI is worth 5% of your grade. QALMRIs will be graded on the following criteria:

1. On Time: with a 10% deduction for each day late, down to 50%
2. Complete: answer all 6 questions
3. Thorough: answers are thorough and accurate
4. In Your Own Words: answers must be in your own words instead of copied directly from the article. Goal: Try making the long, complex information from the article shorter, simpler, and clearer.

Your task is to answer these six questions about the assigned empirical research article:

1. Question: What was the broad question? What was the specific question?
2. Alternative Hypotheses: What are the hypotheses?
3. Logic: If the hypotheses are true, then what was the predicted outcome?
4. Method: What did they do in the experiment?
5. Results: What happened? What was the main finding?
6. Inferences: What can be concluded about the hypotheses based on the results? What can be concluded about the specific and broad questions?

How long? The completed QALMRI should be long enough to answer each question with clear and brief sentences. Most completed QALMRIs will be about one page long.
