Close-Reading and Argument Essay
In order to complete this essay, you must become an observational researcher like Mike Rose. You will investigate the practices of someone who is traditionally not thought of to be literate or at least is thought of as not being highly literate. You must do your investigation in a specific situation (Rose observed his mother, a restaurant server on-site at her job and then wrote about specific tasks that she did during the day).
While you are investigating, you will be trying to determine whether there are any literate practices going on. Remember our definition of literacy involves reading, writing, learning. Be rigorous and discerning in your judgment; after all, no one wants false praise. Closely analyze their actions.
Then, you will need to take your findings and craft them into an argument as to why (or why not) the subject being studied is engaging in literate acts. Assuming that there are some, what do these practices look like? Why are they literate? You will need to support your claims with outside sources and detailed analysis of your observations.
Sources:
You must use 2 print sources in this essay to support your hands-on research. One of these CAN be a text that we have used in class, but one must be a source that you find. It may be a newspaper article (print or online), book, journal article, or an online publication. You must make sure the source is credible (ex: NOT Wikipedia). Please make sure to cite your sources with a correctly formatted MLA Works Cited page. There are resources on the Blackboard website to help you do this.
Audience:
Your audience for this paper will be someone who has not yet studied the kind of literacy that we have talked about in class. This person believes that to be literate means reading and writing books. Your job is to convince them of a different way of understanding literacy.
Presentation:
All papers must be double spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman font, with 1 inch margins (please check the settings on your computer). Make sure to always save your work in two places.
