Title: Decomposition of Sodium Bicarbonate
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment are to: Decompose sodium bicarbonate. Compare the amount of products formed to determine which decomposition reaction occurred. Verify the mathematical concept of stoichiometry.
Chemical and Hazzard:
Procedure: Create data table to include the mass of crucible, mass of crucible and sodium bicarbonate, mass of crucible and product. Set up ring on ring stand and place clay triangle on the ring. Wipe clean crucible and place crucible in triangle. Do not touch crucible with fingers from this point on. Adjust height of ring such that the crucible is about 2-3 inches above burner. Heat crucible for 2-3 minutes to drive off any water and contaminates. Shut off the burner and allow to cool for 2-3 minutes. When cool, use the tongs to transfer crucible to balance to weigh crucible and record mass of empty crucible. Add about 2 gram of sodium bicarbonate to crucible and record exact mass. Use tongs to return crucible to triangle and heat with medium heat for 10 minutes. While heating, use spatula to break up any clumps. Shut burner off and allow to cool. Once cool, weigh the crucible and product and record as mass of 1st heating. Return crucible to the triangle and hear for an additional 3 minutes. Shut the burner off and allow to cool. Once cool, weigh the crucible and product and record as mass of 2nd heating. If mass difference is greater than -03 grams, than repeat. Using spatula, scrape out product a dispose in waste container. Disassemble ring stand and return all equipment to proper location.
Data and Observation:
Mass of crucible: 22.493g
Mass of crucible and sodium bicarbonate: 24.499g
Mass of crucible and product: 1sr heating 23.767g and 2nd heating 23.766g
Result and Calculation:
Conclusion: In this lab, we can determine the theoretical mass of each possible product to identify it. By using stoichiometric calculation, the theoretical mass of the product in each reaction can be calculated and this will be compared to the experimental mass produced from the experiment.
