Introduction:
Introduce both the article under analysis and the author. Specifically state the authorsargument or purpose for writing, and the point(s) you intend to make about it (your thesisstatement which should clearly state to what extent the writer has achieved his or herpurpose based on the criteria for informative/persuasive writing).
Part 1 of Analysis
Analysis of presentation
: Comment on the authors success in achieving his or herpurpose by discussing three or four specific points in support of your thesis. You maybase your discussion on one or more of the following criteria depending on the writers purpose:
Is the information accurate?
Is the information significant?
Has the author defined terms clearly?
Has the author used or interpreted information fairly?
Has the author argued logically?

Somewhere in your textual analysis you may want to comment on the author’s tone, themain rhetorical strategies, the varieties of evidence he/she employs, and any notableelements of development. Itwould probably work best to include a discussion of thesepoints in the first part of your textual analysis when you are analyzing the presentationand evaluating the merits of the writing itself.
Part 2 of Analysis
Your response to the presentation
: Now it is your turn to respond to the authorsargument. With which points do you agree? With which points do you disagree? Discussyour reasons for agreement and/or disagreement by tying these reasons to the largerassumptions of the text. You should not be repeating points already made in the first partof the analysis here. Also, it is better to state fewer points and to explain them fully withsupport, rather than touching on a lot of points superficially.Be precise in identifying where you agree and disagree with an author. State as clearly aspossible what you believe in relation to what the author believes, as presented in thepiece. Whether you agree enthusiastically, agree with reservation, or disagree, you canorganize your reaction in two parts:

Summarize the authors position

State your own position/opinion and explain why you believe as you do, usingexamples from observation/experience (empirical evidence) to strengthen yourpoints. The elaboration, in effect, becomes an argument in itself, and this is trueregardless of the position you take.
Conclusion:
State your conclusion about the overall validity of the articleyourassessment of the authors success at achieving his or her purpose and your reaction to the authors views.
