For this assignment you are asked to engage one of the themes from this course (appropriation, race, gender, etc.) as applied to any popular music of your choosing (it can be from anywhere in the world). This paper places a heavy emphasis on research and social theory, requiring a synthesis of academic and journalistic sources pertaining to your paper topic. You must use six sources, and three must be scholarly. You should plan on working through academic journals and books (available electronically through the UCSB Library webpage) to uncover the existing literature on your topic. Please see the gauchospace assignment description for more detail.*** You will be asked to submit a concise thesis statement for your paper to demonstrate that you have chosen a paper topic and developed an analytical focus for your research and writing *

Please answer each of the following questions, drawing from the readings where applicable. Responses to each question should be a minimum of 100 words.

1. How does Hebdige explain the concepts of “(un)fashion” and “confrontation dressing? What are the motivations, according to Hebdige, behind these stylistic choices?
2. According to Lewis, who did MTV identify as their target consumer audience? What kinds of people/identities ended up being excluded from this target audience and why? Can you think of any currently popular parallels to MTV, and who might their target audiences be (or not be)?
3. What are some of the musical and textual characteristics of “I Will Survive” that Hubbs links to its themes of marginalization and transcendence? How does she argue that these characteristics demonstrate disco’s black, Latino/a and queer roots?

Assignment 3 ( Due by July 25 evening)

Option A: Respond to The Japanese American Creed

Choose one of the following audiences and write a speech responding to Mike Masaoka’s “Japanese American Creed.” The Creed began circulating widely after it was read in Congress on May 9, 1941 and it was reprinted and used at JACL meetings for decades. Regardless of the audience, the speech should show an understanding of (A) the context in which Masaoka wrote the Creed, (B) the overall message and aims of the Creed, and (C) specific ideas from the Creed which would be important to the audience. You may speak in support of the Creed, in opposition to it, to critique its sentiments, to build upon them, and/or to advance any other position that you think would fit the audience you choose.

As a speech, the essay need not follow traditional academic mechanical conventions (e.g. paragraph length, complete sentences, or other elements). The speech should be between 1200 and 1800 words (2-3 pages if written as a standard essay). Please give your speech a title and identify the audience for which you wrote it. Reading Summary-you should be summarizing the most important points that are made by the authors, and those that you find particularly interesting. You need to write in full sentences, rather than listing abbreviated ideas in the form of bullet points.

Assignment 5 (Due by July 30 evening)

The Assignment: Write a 10-page formal research paper about an artist whose work is relevant to the topic of Art in the Age of the Internet derived from the Art 130 reading assignments and your independent research. Any of the assigned readings can be used in your research paper and bibliography.

Research Materials: You will need to utilize the books, exhibition catalogues and scholarly journal articles that are available at the Davidson Library to conduct your research.DO NOT USE: Wikipedia, blogs, newspaper articles, encyclopedias, unverified online sources that are not scholarly.Paper Format:1. 10 pages of text (this does NOT include the cover page, bibliography or images)2. Double-spaced3. Cover page4. Footnotes or Endnotes5. Bibliography6. Images of the works of art discussed7. Use numerous different research sources (including peer-reviewed journal articles, books, exhibition catalogues, monographs, etc.). You may not use blogs, Wikipedia, encyclopedias, dictionaries, Grove Art Online, textbooks and unauthorized websites.

On writing the paper:1. The selection of a good thesis and supporting examples is an important part of producing a good paper. Be selective. The paper is about how to look closely at works of art and how your evaluation of objects and images is expanded by the specific context in which they are presented.2. Write primarily with nouns and verbs. Avoid unnecessary (especially vague and imprecise) adjectives and adverbs.3. Revise and rewrite. Proofread your work. Do not rely solely on “spell check.”

4. Use the dictionary to refer to words you do not fully understand.5. Do not overstate, or excessively use qualifiers (such as very, rather, little, etc.). 

6. Use orthodox diction and accurate spelling. (“Its” is possessive; “It’s” is a contraction for “it is,” “Its’ ” doesn’t exist. “Their” is possessive, “They’re” is a contraction of “they are,” There is declarative).7. Be clear. Make references clearly. (Do not use the word “this” as the subject of a sentence).8. Do not let your opinions get in the way of your writing.9. Avoid using Wikipedia, blogs, newspaper articles, encyclopedia entries and other materials that are not scholarly. These ARE NOT research materials for a formal research paper.10. Get to the point quickly. Concentrate on quality of writing not quantity of words.
