1.     The procedure in this lab is a form of a titration, which carries out a neutralization between acids and bases.  In the environmental field, employees use this same test kit you used in order to test environmental water samples for their alkalinity.  In the natural world, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the salt that dissolves in water to make it alkaline.

• Using the chemical equation for the dissolving of sodium carbonate as a reference, write the balanced chemical equation for the dissolving of calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

• An environmental scientist analyzed water samples from two lakes, Lake X and Lake Y.  The results indicated a great ppm of calcium carbonate in Lake X. Explain why lake X would be able to better resist the negative impact acid rain can have on a lake.
